HALL Family Wines is a family-owned Napa Valley winery behind four labels, HALL, WALT, BACA and Michel Foch, and a network of six tasting rooms across California. For a business where much of the relationship with guests happens in person in its tasting rooms, the technology behind the scenes has to recognise members instantly and treat them consistently online and on site.
In 2026 HALL completed a seven-month project to move its ecommerce, tasting room point of sale and wine club onto Shopify. A single Shopify Plus store now powers all four brand domains, Shopify POS runs in all six tasting rooms, and a wine club platform built for Shopify manages memberships. Every existing customer payment token was preserved, so members did not have to re-enter card details and shipments continued without interruption.
About HALL Wines
Craig and Kathryn Hall founded HALL about 30 years ago, and the business has grown into a multi-brand winery with twelve estate vineyards and tasting rooms in Napa Valley, Sonoma, Palm Springs and Healdsburg. Winemaker Megan Gunderson leads the wines. Direct-to-consumer sales, and especially the wine club, are central to the model, and Emily Harrison, Vice President of Marketing and Direct Sales, has said the company's members have always been at the centre of its decisions.
The Challenge
Over the years HALL's commerce stack had passed through several platforms and accumulated a great deal of custom development. Ecommerce ran on Magento, the tasting rooms used a separate point-of-sale system, and the wine club depended on heavily customised software layered on top of Magento. That patchwork offered flexibility, but it also created growing operational complexity and a long list of systems to maintain.
The split also affected guests. With online sales, tasting room sales and club membership living in different places, staff in a tasting room could not easily see a visitor's full history with the brand. HALL wanted to retire ageing technology without compromising the premium member experience it had spent years building, and without disrupting recurring club shipments in the process.
- Ecommerce on Magento, tasting rooms on a separate POS, and a heavily customised wine club layered on top
- Years of custom development that added maintenance burden and operational complexity
- Customer data split between online, in-person and membership systems
- A requirement to migrate members without asking them to re-enter payment details
- Four brands and six tasting rooms that needed consistent, premium service
The Solution
HALL consolidated onto Shopify, with an implementation partner leading strategy, experience design and a technically complex build. The new architecture combines Shopify Plus for ecommerce, Shopify POS for every tasting room, and Awtomic, a subscription and wine club platform built for Shopify, for membership. Because all three share Shopify's customer and order data, the winery now works from a single customer record.
One Shopify Plus store, four brands
A single Shopify Plus store powers the HALL, WALT, BACA and Michel Foch domains. Guests get a shared cart, checkout and customer account across the brands, while the team manages one store instead of several.
Shopify POS in every tasting room
All six California tasting rooms run on Shopify POS. Staff can recognise club members, see their purchase history, apply member benefits and charge a vaulted card on file without asking for another swipe, which keeps service smooth during busy tastings.
Wine club on Awtomic
Awtomic adds wine-specific membership functions on top of Shopify customer and order data, supporting a redesigned club experience, new member self-service tools and advanced loyalty capabilities.
Compliance and fulfilment automation
The new stack includes integrated compliance and fulfilment automation, reducing manual steps in shipping wine to members and online customers.
Implementation Journey
The implementation took seven months. A central concern was continuity for existing members: the team migrated existing members and years of customer history, including five years of historical order data, and preserved 100% of customer payment tokens. As a result members did not need to re-enter payment details and did not face interruptions to their scheduled shipments. Wine club operations were unified across the four brands and six tasting rooms at the same time. HALL announced the completed project in August 2026, and Emily Harrison noted that it touched every part of the business.
The Results
The most immediate result is simplicity. With ecommerce, point of sale and membership running on one platform, HALL has fewer systems to maintain and a single view of each guest. In the tasting room, that means staff can greet a member with full context and apply their benefits on the spot, rather than looking up information in a separate tool. Online, guests can move between four brands within one account and checkout. The winery has also gained a more flexible foundation for personalisation and membership growth, with improved tasting room operations and automated compliance and fulfilment supporting the team day to day. The published sources do not report sales or membership figures.
- Seven-month implementation covering four brands and six tasting rooms
- 100% of customer payment tokens preserved, with no member re-entry or shipment interruptions
- Five years of historical order data migrated
- One Shopify Plus store now serves all four brand domains with a shared cart and checkout
- A single customer record shared by ecommerce, POS and the wine club
- Fewer systems to maintain, replacing Magento, a separate POS and custom club software
Key Takeaways for Growing Businesses
Protect the member experience during migration
For subscription and club businesses, the riskiest moment in a replatform is asking loyal customers to do anything. Planning to carry over payment tokens and history means members barely notice the change, which protects recurring revenue.
One customer record changes in-person service
When online, in-venue and membership data live together, front-line staff can recognise and reward guests immediately. That turns technology consolidation into a visible hospitality improvement.
Consolidate brands without losing identity
Multi-brand operators can run separate brand domains from one store, keeping each label's identity while sharing checkout, accounts and operations behind the scenes.
